Wired News: Porn Blogs Manipulate Google

We knew this had to happen sooner or later. But if we're all honest with ourselves we have to thank the porn industry for a lot of what makes the net great. Things like real-time credit card authorisations, streaming video, etc all come from the porn industry trying to serve it's large customer base. There was a Wired article years ago about the Internet's dirty little secret…and that is the debt we all owe to our collective prurience. So, let's hear it for the porn industry, the true Internet vangards! Hopefully this won't get out of hand and spill over into the blogging world proper. Also, I hope this doesn't end Google's love affair with blogs, because that will only be bad for both site owners and info-seekers. In the last 6 months or so when I've searched for something I've found a lot of very helpful posts on blogs.

Wired News: Porn Blogs Manipulate Google

When Google bought blogging software pioneer Blogger last year, it probably didn't expect that its new technology would be used to goose the page rankings of porn sites.

But that's exactly what's happening, as an outfit called CyberQuest has recently set up a few dozen cross-linked, porn-themed Blogspot blogs (powered by Blogger), all of which link to three of its for-profit porn sites. According to a couple of experienced bloggers, the purpose behind the cross-linking strategy is to artificially raise the Google rankings of the three porn sites.
