Shared Spaces Briefing, Jun 30
News from Shared Spaces. The departure of David Fowler for IMlogic is certainly interesting and Michael makes good suppositions on the “why”. I'm also struck by how few Windows Server 2003 customers had implemented SharePoint. While I think SharePoint is interesting, I agree with Michael, I'm not sure it's ready for prime time.
Today's highlights: David Fowler grooves with IMlogic; Antepo BlackBerry Client; 28% of Windows Server 2003 Customers use Windows SharePoint Services; Kerio MailServer 6; Groove in Government;
- David Fowler, VP of marketing and strategic alliances at Groove Networks, has left for IMlogic to head its worldwide marketing organization. Comment: But why would he leave Groove? Is it (a) that Groove isn't 'happening' fast enough for him, (b) there's upcoming bad news at Groove, or (c) IMlogic is paying more financial and idea-dollars? tmcnet.com

- Microsoft announced that 28% of customers running its new Windows Server 2003 are using Windows SharePoint Services (WSS), a team workspace solution incorporated into Windows Server. 45% of the remaining customer base plan to embrace WSS within 12 months. Also, in the past 8 months, Microsoft's internal count of WSS sites has jumped from 25,000 to 61,000. Comment: Wow … I hope Microsoft has got a good strategy for lifecycle management of those sites … it sure is blooming internally. WSS needs some major additions, too, before I think it is enterprise ready, eg, offline replication capabilities without relying on third-party vendors. Also, I think it a bit deceptive that SharePoint Portal Server isn't mentioned, which definitely isn't free, and which definitely is needed once an organization gets above 10 or 20 WSS sites.
