From Shared Spaces…July 16 updates

Today's highlights: Microsoft LCS 2005 to link public IM networks; CourseForum ProjectForum 3.7 and CourseForum 3.7; eRoom.net Seminar;

  • Microsoft announced that Live Communications Server 2005, due in 4Q2004, will provide gateway routing services to link users to all three of the public IM networks — MSN, AOL (AOL IM and ICQ), and Yahoo. Connectivity to the three networks will be provided via an add-on module for each, and with a tariff (as yet not specified) for each. Comments: (1) this is only for organizations that will run Microsoft LCS … it is not indicative of generalized interoperability from a single client for consumer users; (2) in Microsoft accounts, this will reduce the market scope for IMlogc, Akonix, and FaceTime, although note that LCS includes archiving technology licensed from IMlogic; and (3) although the scope for Akonix and FaceTime are reduced, Microsoft's poor security record of recent months and years leads me to believe that organizations will still deploy an Akonix, IMlogic or FaceTime solution in parallel to LCS 2005 to plug (a) the gaps in LCS, and (b) the potential vulnerabilities in LCS. • CourseForum Technologies released Version 3.7 of ProjectForum and CourseForum, its group work and collaboration software for project teams and educational initiatives. Runs on Windows, Mac OS X, Linux and FreeBSD, with a browser as the client. Available immediately. Screenshots CourseForum
  • EMC is hosting an online seminar on July 20 to introduce the latest version of eRoom.net, the latest version of the Documentum eRoom hosted collaborative workspace offering. Documentum
