Share Spaces Updates for Aug 2

As per usual great news from Michael Sampson of Shared
Spaces…who also caught a bug on a recent post of mine and IMed me to
let me know (thank you again Michael!)
Lot's
of great information today (or yesterday). Lookout is available
for download again, so if you use Outlook…snap it up before XP SP2 is
released and brings Microsoft to a screeching halt (even though Scoble says they're ready).
I
think the most interesting bit of news is the post on why one user is
getting rid of Groove. All the comments strike a chord we me.
Here are the three points cited:Goodbye Groove
1. Groove makes my desktop a little less stable. On my oldish machines both at work and at home other programs occasionally crash when Groove is running, and printing won't work.
2. I have repeatedly held back from inviting people to join a workspace because I felt reluctant to subject them to the 30M download, plus the time they would have to spend installing the system.
3. I have repeatedly held back from creating a workspace for a project because I felt reluctant to tie the project to my and others' continued use of Groove.
I used Groove when I was with Glaxo years back. But since I've moved on, as much as I've wanted
to use it, the cost of the application and it's limitations have
prevented me from implementing it. As good as Groove is, I think,
as I've said before, it is the poster-child for duplicative
computing…too many applications that do the same or similar things.
Although I don't use it as much as I used to, Shinkuro is a small download, has drop-dead simple file sharing, and can work with OS X, Windows, and Linux.
My
focus is more and more, find the one good app that does X and use
it. I'm really trying to limit the number of apps that overlap
with each other. Though I'm not ready to uninstall Groove yet, it
hasn't run on start up in over a year. That's probably the
biggest indication of it's day to day usefulness, isn't it?
Today's
highlights: Siemens SK65 with BlackBerry; Lookout 1.2 from Microsoft; A
User Farewells Groove; SCO Office Server 4.1; Cingular Xpress Mail by
SEVEN; TeamScope Scrubber 3.0;
