Inv-2 Organisation | news | The consultant also, apparently, has no clothes
I finally read the article The Nonsense of Knowledge Management last week on the ferry. This posting discusses it as well and mirrors my opinions.
I agree with both authors that KM is a bad term and has been overblown. However I disagree with Wilson is that I think helping any company effectily manage information is very important. I work in a very information intensive job and sector. Being able to go to my clients with a tidbit of relavent information before my competitors do is powerful.
It is imperative, in my mind, that companies find ways to tap into the vast amounts of information internally and externally and use it. I don't dispute Wilson's (and others') critique that the first and most crucial step is to make a social change within the company. Get people want to share information, or better, give them a taste of the power of automated, catalogued information gathering, then work into getting all documents stored online and indexed. Getting professional blogs and internal webfeeds going.
