Duke University will give iPods to freshman
Okay beyond the “Is it too late to apply for the fall semester” jokes, I think this is as important as computers, then laptops becoming deriguer on campus. I like the fact that Duke is giving them to the students, not requiring them to buy them. I was looking at Apple's site yesterday to read the info on the new iPod and it is impressive. I really like this use of the iPod as, essentially, portable storage device. What is interesting is that even without a color screen this is seen as a powerful tool. The PDA makes really missed the bandwagon on this one. Here's a simple device that does a few things pretty well and one thing really well.
I'll be interested to see when museums, for example, deploy these for the audio guided tours. Or even business people buy them for contact/meeting managers (and yeah you can listen to tunes at your desk).
Incoming freshmen get free MP3 players to access university info and course content. In a new experiment, Duke University in North Carolina intends to give 20GB IPods to each of its 1650 incoming new students on August 19.
The plan is described as “part of an initiative to encourage creative uses of technology in education and campus life.”
