Company Plugs RSS as Alternate to E-Mail Marketing

I think everyone who blogs and uses RSS to some degree knew this would be coming. But it really only makes good sense. If I want to know about the new widgets from Acme Co. Getting another e-mail in my inbox isn't going to help me much. A webfeed though, I would like. I know all my webfeeds are imformational, I get to them at my liesure, and I drop the webfeeds that I don't like. Sure comercializing RSS will bug some people. But so did banner ads, so it e-mail advertising. Once marketers figure out that large segments of a population are using a communications vehicle, they will find a way to tap into it. For exmaple, I really like the Moreover feeds I get. Now every few hours (or some interval of time) they throw an ad in. A tad annoying, but then I made an Outlook rule that I run before I read to toss all the ads in the trash (it's keyed to the subject lines).

But of course when a new as comes up, I do have to read it to be able to then filter it. Small price to pay, I think.

Company Plugs RSS as Alternate to E-Mail Marketing: “MessageCast Inc. is developing technologies designed to help enterprises conduct legitimate marketing campaigns that differentiate themselves from spam in the eyes of both customers and spam filters.

The company's LiveMessage message delivery technologies use alternatives to SMTP, the spam-prone protocol used by e-mail, to enable enterprises to contact prospective customers on an opt-in basis and with the sender fully authenticated.”
