Talks

I got an email from Lindsay yesterday to ask if I wanted to get 15-20 workshop on podcasting at the F5 Expo next month. Hmm, let me think about that for a moment…
Hellz yeah!
So, it’s all set now, I’m giving a few (2-3) short podcasting workshops on the show floor during the F5 Expo—Podcasting 101 | F5 Expo—which kinda reminds me, why don’t I podcast as much as I want to…
Hmm, gotta change that.
Anyway, I love talking about podcasts and video blogging (I like talking about video blogging, doing it, [...]

It’s not hard to get blogging, regardless of what blog engine you use (though WordPress is the best IMHO), but there are tricks and tools that make life easier for you. At WordCamp Victoria I decided to distill and talk about the blogging toolkit that I’ve built up over the years. Tools like blog editors, image editors, RSS readers, note gathering tools, even Twitter clients.
Usually bloggers start out like this …
Domain: check
Web host: check
WordPress installed: check
What’s next? The tools. The goodies. The tools that make the job a little easier. [...]

This weekend one of my old stomping grounds, Victoria, is hosting its first WordCamp—WordCamp Victoria—I had waxed and waned about trying to go. Between finishing book 1—Create Your Own Blog: 6 Easy Projects to Start Blogging Like a Pro—and starting book 2, I’ve been a little busy.
Still, you know, the call of a WordCamp is pretty strong. So when the chance came up for me to fill a slot there, I mulled it over for a while. Honestly, looking at the agenda and list of speakers, I wasn’t sure that [...]

This Saturday I’m teaching my full-day audio/video podcasting course at UBC Robson Square (9-4)—UBC Continuing Studies—and there is still time to sign up and room available for in the class.
The first class was a huge test for me. I could have (should have) been a lot better prepared for it. Now, however, I have had the benefit of having taught my full-day and half-day WordPress courses (don’t forget my full-day WP class at UBC is Halloween!) several times and have a much better sense of just how I need to [...]

This past June I taught a couple Continuing Education courses at UBC Robson Square and they were so well received that before the end of June they were scheduled again for this fall. Now that you’re settling into fall, how about learning how to podcast (audio or video) or build a website with WordPress (for the non-geeky set)?
I promise that you’ll come away from my classes learning at least a couple new tricks and maybe even a radio show or website. So, here are the details:
Intro to Audio and Video [...]

As many of you all know I love to teach and give talks. It’s in my blood to teach (both my parents did) and is something that gives me great personal satisfaction. So when I got a call last week from BCIT asking if I knew of someone who could teach 4 all-day classes on WordPress my answer was: “Yeah, me.”
I’ve been trying (badly) to keep this under wraps since then, but it’s official now–starting Friday morning and for the next two Fridays (I’m out of town for the last [...]

I had such a great time teaching my Building Websites with WordPress (for normal people) half-day at UBC that M2O and I thought we’d offer the class as well.
After teaching the class at UBC, I realized that a half-day course isn’t enough and maybe offering an intro, advanced, and full-day options might be a good idea. So this is how I’ve structured the courses…
The morning intro class will use WordPress.com to build a regular website (with or without an attached blog) and also get into what makes a good website [...]

Everyone knows that social media is hot. Everyone also knows that you should monitor social media for your brand and name, but what about taking it to the next level and using social media to gain a business advantage?
Welcome to Social Media for Competitive Intelligence.
I’ve been working on things like this since 2004. First based within blogs, but always using various search tools to comb through the Internet to monitor brands and gather other nuggets of info. Now I’m adding social media to the mix.
On July 28th I’m going to [...]

Next week is WordCamp Whistler and in addition to exercising my shoulder do I can take pictures, I’m also prepping to give a short talk on using WP to build “regular” websites.

When Duane and Rebecca opened the speaker submission form, I zapped in with one of my favourite topics: using WP to build a website (yeah with a blog too). Morten had a similar idea, and while a panel was the first option, now each of us will have 30 mins of fame:
In my original pitch I asked for a [...]
