Did you hear that sound? That low, thunking kind of sound? Yeah that’s the sound of a writer working on a book about WordPress banging their head against a wall (or desk). In case you didn’t know, book publishing timelines are rather long. Not as long as say, Microsoft OS releases, but typically longer than the release schedule for WordPress. Using WordPress is slated to be release in July (feel free to pre-order now), and in case you hadn’t looked at a calendar it’s March and my first draft of [...]

I’m not a huge fan of working in offices anymore. Not only am I rather out of practice (only one year in the past 10 have I gone into an “office” everyday), but I find them one of the biggest anti-workplaces I know. I enjoy writing and working in a coffee shop more than an office. Why?
People.
In an office there are people (well, duh), but because there are people you have to abide by standard social norms. If someone calls your name, not responding is considered rather rude. Never answering [...]

Very soon after I started blogging, I started using a blog editor to power up my blogging (and prevent the “aiiigghhh I lost my connection and my post!!!!” which was very common at conferences, still is actually). In those days I was using Qumana for the most part, which makes sense since I was a part of the company and helping guide the growth of the app.
For its time, Qumana was a fantastic blogging app. It was almost perfect (I was always pushing for more and better refinement), but Qumana [...]

I hit a big milestone tonight with Using WordPress, reaching the 75% mark finishing writing chapter 13 tonight. I still have to format them in the Pearson Word style, take some screenshots, and record the audio-video parts, but the hardest part is done. This book has certainly been a whirlwind thus far, a huge difference from Create Your Own Blog. There is a bit of an unknown to manage–when WordPress 3.0 comes out and how much of the book will I need to update.
I knew this would be part of [...]

You know my kvetching about “Missed Schedule” posts? Yeah still haven’t found that 100% answer yet. So, I’m taking my own advice and posting this without any plugins running. Yes, I know this goes out to Twitter. And yes, I might delete this post. Why am I writing a post of actually length instead of the classic “test post”? Because I think there is a connection with post length, number of categories set, and tags and the error.
And even though I should be working on “lucky” chapter 13, this is [...]

I’ve been putting the wraps on the chapter on managing media in WordPress (yes, I know, “don’t”, ha ha I already used that joke) and when I got to the section on working with WordPress galleries, I had to ask myself “Does anyone really use them?”
Personally, I almost never do (I used one once I think) and prefer to use Flickr for my gallery needs. One of the biggest limitations with galleries in WordPress is that you can’t use existing images in your media library, you have to upload them [...]

There’s nothing like being a WordPress user who’s supposed to know what’s what and not being able to get a basic thing like posting through a blog editor to work consistently. Since WP 2.9.1 came out I’ve had a helluva time with WordPress on DreamHost. I get strange 404 not found errors and when I’m posting remotely either a) all of the time or b) when planets in a distant as yet unknown galaxy align I get the charming “Missed Schedule” error.
Since, as you might gather I’d rather figure this [...]

The Changing Face of Reader Engagement–I Want to Hear from You
by Tris Hussey on February 9, 2010 · 7 comments

To really understand this post you need to understand a few things about me:
I pour over my webstats to learn more about who my readers are, what they read, and how they find me.
I love discussing the things I write about. That’s why I’ve written about them in the first place.
After blogging for about six years now, I’ve watched social media grow and evolve a lot, especially in how readers interact with writers.
Since I pour over my stats on a near-daily basis, especially when I see a traffic spike, I [...]
