Small plugin cull

Just in case you think I install every plugin on the planet here, I don’t. In fact I did a pretty hard cull of plugins tonight. My account has been hitting my allocations on DreamHost pretty hard of late and while I don’t think it’s due to any of my WP installs (I think it was my RSS server), it was a good excuse to ask “Do I really need that plugin installed…”

So as a WP tip du jour once a month look at the list of plugins you have running and ask yourself if they are really helping you or are they potentially slowing your blog down.

Not just plugins: each of us should regularly take a look at the various buttons, links to external services, ads, and such that are cluttering up our sidebars, footers, etc. When I re-did my blog last month, I stripped out of a bunch of those when I noticed they were unnecessary and cluttered up the design and readability of the site. And I’d done that once before in 2007 too. Compare:

That old one looks like a mess now.

And, uh, Tris, I notice your sidebar speaking links include F5 Expo, WordCamp Victoria, and Northern Voice, all of which have passed… :)

Good point on sidebars. Those do get cluttered too. And, yes, I have the previous events up there … just for posterity.

      For now.
