I’ve been putting the wraps on the chapter on managing media in WordPress (yes, I know, “don’t”, ha ha I already used that joke) and when I got to the section on working with WordPress galleries, I had to ask myself “Does anyone really use them?”
Personally, I almost never do (I used one once I think) and prefer to use Flickr for my gallery needs. One of the biggest limitations with galleries in WordPress is that you can’t use existing images in your media library, you have to upload them anew to have them be “attached” to the post to then be able to be put into a gallery.
Not the most efficient use of media there. Who wants to upload the same image over and over just because you want to use it in a different post later? Hopefully you’re answering “not me!” because otherwise you’re wasting server space with the same images over and over. So give the limitations and the fact that there are a myriad better ways to embed a gallery of images into a post than the built-in gallery function, do you use it?
This isn’t a rhetorical question, because I do want to know. When I’ve seen WP users using galleries I often have to fix them or the post (especially if the gallery code it early in the post and a post excerpt is used) to make things look nice. So…built-in galleries or not?
Would you use them if the features were changed to be able to use previously uploaded images?
The lines are open and waiting for your call…
And we have RJ from Utica on line 2… (kidding)
