I’m sure you’ve heard the expression “fake it til you make it”, meaning that if you’re not happy pretend you are happy until you feel that way…or a myriad other examples. Sometimes, you know, writing is like that. I’ve been stumped on what to write about here for a couple days.
Sure, there has been a lot of news going on. I could have talked about the fake Windows Black Screen of Death fiasco, or Chrome for Mac Beta, or … just about anything. However I feel like I owe you, dear reader, a little more than my re-hashing of the news of the day. You deserve something with some meat on it.
Well this post might not have a lot of meat on it, but it is like hitting a sealed jar on the bottom to break the seal you you can open it easier. Book two is meandering along (you know going through the nitty gritty of installing and setting up WordPress can get a little dry), my big telecommuting column for the Observer (part 1 at least) is almost there, and I have tomorrow’s product review and content post for Techplanations outlined in my head. I should be good to go then…
That is if the writing faeries don’t decide to take tomorrow off, by I think can keep them around with promised of coffee in the afternoon and single-malt Scotch in the evening. Those writing faeries, you know how they like their Scotch.
In case you’re wondering, just pushing through and writing is one of the key things I’ve found to break writer’s block for me. Not writing for a reason, just writing. Push it out there. Maybe it’s crap, maybe not. But you have to start somewhere.
What else? Read a bit. Even one of those paper-based book/magazine things. Switch gears, if you’re trying to write tech, maybe just jot a story. Heck, even break out a pen and paper and dash out stuff longhand (this is why I have a trusty fountain pen and paper with me all the time).
There are the standard, take a break, take a walk … of course the problem is if you’ve been “taking a break” for a few days, and you now feel like taking a long walk off a short pier …
What are some of your writing-blogging tips?
How do break free and entice the writing faeries back?
