Jordan Behan passed around this link from Trevor this morning—Hosting Apocalypse | LayerBoom Networks—which has the gist that was cloud computing centres like Amazon’s EC2 and Google Apps engine become more stable and popular, the role of someone one managing racks and racks of boxes might be coming to an end.
Maybe not so fast. Google Apps Premier has had a series of outages recently that makes me wonder if having your own rack of servers is such a bad thing after all.
What I think the cloud servers are going to be great at are little start ups and then huge data sets, the people in the middle are going to need to have their own machines.
Cloud computing and storage could bring regular hosting costs down as well, but again it’s a reliability thing.
When we start putting a lot of eggs into a few baskets, we’re vulnerable to failure. As cloud storage matures, I’m sure that we’ll all have stuff up there and it will be stable, secure, and have great redundancy. Right now though, I wouldn’t count out the manage server services just yet.
