How has blogging changed you?

Reading Gus’ post on “blogebrities”—A Word on Blogebrities | Gus Digital—has gotten me thinking about how blogging and being deeply enmeshed/steeped/involved in social media has changed me.

First thing to note is the title here. It isn’t “has blogging changed you” but “how has blogging changed you” because like all things the act of doing changes you. Once you put that first post up, you’re different.

I know I’ve changed and I also know that it wasn’t all for the best. I know that I have let it go to my head. I know that I’ve also been brought down to Earth more than once.

Frankly the past 2.5 months have been a very self reflective period for me. I’ve been taking stock and looking for my place in the world.

While I don’t know if I’ve found it. I do know that posts like Gus’ remind me to remember that in the end, this is all about writing.

    Thanks for write up Tris.

My point to writing the post was to get people to think back to their roots and to focus on who they are as a person, not what the blogosphere has made them to be.

I like the writing too – I like writing about Vancouver (especially the history tidbits), sharing my knowledge and over the years I’ve been able to help people too. I also took on this blogging thing full time because I like the writing so much, although the freelance web writing realm is not as glamorous *cough* or as lucrative *cough* as one may think ;-) maybe that’s why the freebies are such a bonus. That, and I’m all about getting things on the cheap (being a single income household for a few years will do that to ya).

Blogosphere aside, blogging has made me more outgoing. I know the old adage about bloggers is that they’re introverted, and yes, the very act of blogging has caused to me look inward more. However, it is the process of focusing on who I am (looking inward) that makes me feel confident and more extroverted. I definitely view this as a positive change. Tris, do you feel as though blogging has made you a better person, or just more self-aware?

“fame” changes everyone. as soon as you get noticed, or recognized, admired or tossed a few perks – you start to take them for granted… and expect them.

think jlo was always a diva? no, she used to take the 6 to the city to dance.

was madonna always so demanding? nope.

but after a while, you get a taste and you like that taste and you want more and crave more.

it takes a strong soul to stay grounded and not believe their own bullshit. i struggle with it everyday.

@Gus: You’re welcome. You’re right on the money. I started blogging to express myself and share my passion for all stuff geeky. Not to seek fame and fortune.

So, yes @MLRebecca I do think I’m a better person in many ways now. I am certainly more confident, in a good way, about my writing and photography. I’ve gotten several jobs through blogging and met some amazing people as well.

@Miss604-Rebecca yes I tell people I’m want to be rich and famous, I’ve got the famous part down pat…
I love social media, I love writing, and I love photography. I also love eating and having a roof over my head. Sometimes it’s been a struggle to mesh all those things together ;) .

@buzz I totally get it. That said I do get a rush when I hear you talk about something online and I think wow I know that person too!.

I’m lucky that I’m reminded that the world doesn’t revolve around social media on a near daily basis.

I started my blog as a personal journey and to take a break while having to focus on my PhD thesis (why not admit it – it’s the truth). It has evolved into what my blog is now, but those who know me (and I know you do) know that my blog is pretty much the journey of who I am and where I am headed and my day-to-day struggles and successes.

Although as someone with a very limited budget, I have to admit – I also love the freebies.
