Jackie Huba covers another “LonelyGirl15″ kind of thing going on on Church of the Customer:
Posters around Hollywood mention a missing girl named Amy Pressman. Her “cousin” has created a MySpace page asking for help to find Amy, who has not returned from a camping trip. Amy’s own MySpace page has some “ominous” final blog posts. Many of the comments on both pages express grief over her disappearance.
It appears that this is a stunt to build buzz for an upcoming movie. Cute. Not. Look I know movie promotion needs to be “edgy” and stuff. I know that building a kind of strange viral buzz is a goal for many promoters and marketers, but this, this just isn’t right. The problem isn’t that there is a persona being created, or that a MySpace page has been crafted to achieve it. It’s that they are exploiting human misery and sadness. The sadness of a child or loved one gone missing. I’m glad this has been uncovered as a hoax. It sickens me, just sickens me, that someone would think this was a good idea. What about the feelings of millions of parents who’ve children gone missing? What about all the people who are trying to use social media to raise awareness and help find children?
Frankly, the creators of this should be just ashamed. They should take it down and apologize. Any unspent money in the budget left, should go to help find real missing children.
Yes, Jackie, this is creepy.
