Great software on the cheap, like free

Ads by AdGenta.comFrom LifeHacker this morning I found a spiffy list of free software that you should check out (especially for tricking out that new back-to-school laptop).? Hey I know software is expensive.? From this list you can pretty much get everything you need from Office to images to note taking to audio recording.? Of course at some point you might want to invest in a commercial version of a particular type of software, that's cool, but in the meantime using free or open source will save you money and let you spend the cash on apps that you really need.

I've tried several times downloading ” free” softwares. But do they normally expire? Or are these just the trial versions?

Truly free software doesn't expire. Some commercial software comes in a free and paid version … ZoneAlarm let's you use all the “Pro” paid features then if you don't wish to buy it, the number of features drops. Personally the free version of ZA is enough for most people.
Regardless all the software listed on that site are truly free, no strings.

    Tris,
there's a bunch of free stuff (nestled among the shareware) in this site.

a friend was using the freeware equivalent of camtasia too.
although in my opinion, the scalability, reliability and functions aren't as comprehensive as the commercial versions.
however, if your requirements aren't too heavy, i guess they'd suffice.

Very true Andrew. That's the balance between free and commercial apps. Take Audacity. Great open-source audio editor. I used it for a long time, but when I got serious about podcasting I looked at commercial alternatives.
I think free software lets you figure out what you need, and then only spend the money on the important things.
